Creatine Supplements

Creatine supplements have become extremely common performance enhancing supplements that are used by athletes and bodybuilders. In fact, many would argue that this is the most popular among all of the ingredients in this category. It is believed that it can help to achieve a sudden burst of energy while enhancing an athlete’s muscle mass.

One of the reasons that creatine supplements have become as popular as they are has to do with the fact that they are readily available to athletes. They do not require a doctor’s prescription, and they come in the form of energy bars, tablets, powders, and drink mixes. Moreover, they can be purchased in many different locations, such as online, as well as at health food and nutrition stores, drug stores, and even supermarkets.

Though creatine supplements are based on a natural ingredient, there have not been many long term studies that have been performed on it. Scientists have yet to understand specifically how it works and what impact it may have on all of the various parts of the body. It is not yet known exactly how effective it is, and what effect it can have on people of different ages.

Creatine itself is a substance that the body will transform into creatine phosphate. That is a substance that the body uses to create adenosine triphosphate (better known as ATP). It is ATP that the body uses as energy to contract its muscles. Though the body does produce some of its own creatine to be used for this purpose, it also gains additional amounts from foods that are high in proteins, such as fish and meat.

Creatine supplements have been available since the 1970s, at which time scientists created products that they felt might be able to enhance an athlete or bodybuilder’s performance. It wasn’t until the 1990s that its popularity truly took off and those target markets started to use it as a popular sports product.

Recent studies have indicated that approximately 8 percent of adolescent athletes are taking creatine supplements in one form or another. These products are especially popular among athletes in high school and college, but they have also caught on among professionals. This is particularly true among hockey and football players, as well as wrestlers and gymnasts. About 40 percent of college athletes use this type of product, and around 50 percent of professional athletes use them.

The belief is that creatine supplements can help those individuals to boost their lean muscle mass, improve their strength, and assist in speeding up the recovery process following a workout.
