Special K Protein Water
Special K Protein Water (also called K2O) is a type of product created by Kellogg’s, a company that is best known for its breakfast cereals. That said, this manufacturer also has a line of products that are meant to help dieters to lose weight and other people to help to achieve certain health goals. This particular product is geared primarily toward individuals who are seeking to stay on track with a diet that is higher in protein. Though the main target market for this product is clearly women, it is also considered to be quite suitable for men.
What is Special K Protein Water?
The product itself isn’t meant to be a specific bodybuilding, athletic, or weight loss diet unto itself, but is meant to fit well into that type of diet. Though the product is not sold on the official Kellogg’s website, it is available in many grocery stores, health food stores, and online through third party sites.
The Special K Protein Water products were originally available in two flavors at a time. Strawberry kiwi and pink lemonade replaced previous flavors such as mixed berry, lemon twist, and tropical blend. At the time of this review, they were no longer being listed on the official website.
What Does This Product Contain?
According to the official website, one serving of the Special K Protein Water, provides you with 5 grams of protein. It does this through its ingredients, which include water, 2 percent or less of sugar, polydextrose, whey protein isolate, citric acid, natural flavor, phosphoric acid, calcium gluconate, calcium lactate, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, niacinamide, yellow #5, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), and vitamin B12.
Though the Kellogg’s website also points out that the products boost the user’s fiber intake as well as protein, it is important to consider the claims made by the manufacturer about this product. It is likely that it does contain 5g of protein. However, whether or not that actually helps an individual to enhance the impact of their diet means taking a look at how much protein an individual should be consuming in a day.
Customers who drink Kellogg’s K2O Protein Water for the purpose of weight loss tend to express disappointment in the reviews they leave. Their ratings are lower, and comments are more negative. This indicates that, on its own, this product doesn’t do much to give people the results they’re looking for on the bathroom scale.
At the same time, this product doesn’t claim to bring on weight loss all on its own. Instead, its claims are that the protein and fiber it contains will help dieters to feel fuller longer. This suggests that it is meant to be used in conjunction with a healthy diet, at the very least, if not also combined with other weight management efforts such as exercise.
Does Special K Protein Water Provide Enough Protein to Be Worthwhile?
According to the typical method for calculating the protein needs of an individual, a person’s weight in pounds should be divided by 0.37. This means that a person who weighs 150 pounds would require 55 grams of protein. Someone who weighs 200 pounds would require 74 grams of protein, and a 250 pound person would need 92 grams of protein. Even the lightest in this category wouldn’t get much help from the 5 grams in Special K Protein Water.
This doesn’t mean that there isn’t any point to drinking Special K2O Protein Water, but it does indicate that it isn’t much of a supplement if you’re trying to make up for skipping a portion of protein in your meals or snacks.
The K2O nutrition label shows that prepared product is essentially water, whey protein, sugar and calcium. Most people could obtain similar benefits from a glass of skim milk, while enjoying several other nutrients from that latter beverage which is also considerably less expensive. Research has indicated that protein water provides a greater feeling of fullness than regular water would offer. That said, there isn’t much else that this product has to offer in terms of nutrition.
If the feeling of fullness and some sweet flavors to support a healthy weight loss diet is what you’re seeking, then this refreshing beverage may hit the spot. If you’re planning to lean on Kellogg’s Special K Protein Water for weight loss, you may not find that it provides the results you’re hoping for. Equally, when you read the marketing for this product, that’s not what it’s promising.
It’s important to look closely at the wording of those ads to understand just what it may provide. The dieting work will be your own, it is only claiming to be a beverage that fits in with those efforts, particularly if you still have room for more protein in your daily macronutrient balance.
